The Team.

Kevin Sproul, Technical Director

Kevin has been in sail making since he was headhunted (by Sobstad) as a talented young sailor. That was 22 years ago. Kevin moved through the Olympic pathway classes and still, when time permits, races high performance dinghies. As a sought after tactician and helm, Kevin has been successful nationally and internationally. Winning numerous Cowes weeks, Commodores Cups, and the five big European Regatta's (Palma Vela, Capri Rolex Cup, Carlo Negri Regatta, Porto Fino, Copa Del Rey Palma, Voiles St. Tropez) and most race days he can be found on the Solent or sometimes further afield making sure Ultimate clients and customers are getting the best from their sails.

Lately Kevin has been competing in the Soto 40 Class in Europe, tactician or helm on the first British boat to break the Spanish monopoly of regatta wins in the Audi Med Cup. And the J/80 has been his personal class of choice for five years, always finishing in the top five at the World Championships and winning the National Championships four times.

Kevin is one of our key designers, gifted with the talent to take what he sees on the water and put it directly into designs. Not many lofts can boast such a close relationship between sailor on board, and designer. And when he gets the chance, Kevin is also to be found family sailing with his kids.

Paul Hooker, Sales Director

Pauls' family have been in Hamble village since 1750 and they have been involved in sailing since then. He is a successful and talented sailor whose early pathway was not too dissimilar to business partner Kevin, except he started out in Oppies in Central Africa.

Paul was National Champion level as a youngster, competing in 420’s, a member of the UK National Youth Squad in 1984 competing in the San Diago Youth World before getting the wanderlust bug and travelling the world as a trimmer. His big break was through David Thomas, the designer of the Sonata and Sigma 33, which Paul raced, building many Hunter 707’s which he raced to success locally and in national championships.

Paul ran a dedicated charter company as MD before moving to Sobstad where he managed the loft, including making new dinghy sails and sails for yachts of all sizes. Whilst he was operations manager he really started getting involved with actually selling sails. His practical knowledge and experience was much more informative for the customer than glib sales chat, but that has been a very strong grounding for Ultimate Sails.

Paul has sailed Mumm 30’s to Class 40’s but also successfully project managed sail inventories for big yachts, such as Oysters and Swans up to 90 feet. He has also looked after all of the engineering and production set ups for all different types of sails and has considerable expertise on all different types of rig.

Our door is always open to discuss anything to do with boats or sails and we make great coffee, so come and see us! Contact Us...
