Celebrating 20 years of designing the fastest J Boat Sails
2012 marks 20 years since the first J Boats arrived in the UK, the J39 “Jackdaw” was launched with some of the most advanced sails ever seen. Jackdaw was equipped with full Kevlar membrane sails with laminated pockets, headboards and tapes when her competition were sailing around with cross cut Dacron or tri-radial Kevlar sails. “Jackdaw” went on to win many races including Class 0 at Cowes week and the Round the Island race. As an indication of how the speed and size of boats has increased over the years she was the second boat home in the Round the Island Race and first home in several of Cowes week races!

These sails were the start of a radical development in sail-making in the UK and we have been the sail maker of choice ever since, helping every new J boat fitted with our sails to go straight to the front of the fleet.

Since 1992 we have helped J Boat owners to win races and top level regattas in the J80, J92, J92 IRM, J92S, J97, J105, J109, J111, J122 through to the J133.

Most recent successes include:

       •    J80 National Champions 2011
       •    J80 First British Boat and 6th Overall Spi Ouest 2012
       •    J92s National Champion 2011
       •    J109 victory in the races sailed in the Hamble Winter Series 2011
       •    J111 Winner Group 1 and 6th over Round the Island Race 2011
       •    J111 Winner IRC 1 J Cup 2011
       •    J111 Winner IRC Class 2 Cowes week 2011

Solid start to 2012 season for Soto 40 Ngoni
Tony Buckingham and his crew onboard Ngoni sailed a consistent regatta to finish 3rd in class at the PalmaVela 2012.

Out racing with new crew, Ngoni knew it would be a tough regatta especially with Iberdrola and the newly launched Alegre to compete with.  They pulled together and enjoyed some close racing in what can only be described as first class racing conditions, enough to test the crew, get to grips with the boat once again and improve tactically throughout the 7 race series.

The next event for Ngoni is in Barcelona towards the end of May.

For more information on the sails used by Ngoni please contact the sales team on sales@ultimatesails.co.uk or 023 8045 6205

Top British J80 at Spi Ouest 2012
Kevin Sproul and his crew onboard Ultimate Sails were comfortably the top British J/80 racing at Spi Ouest regatta from 5th – 9th April 2012.

Ultimate Sails finished 6th overall in the fleet of 119 J80s with a consistent set of results all inside the top 10.  It was the last big regatta for the J80 fleet before the World championships which are being hosted by the Royal Dart Yacht Club from 9th - 15th June 2012.

Spi Ouest was a practice regatta for Kevin and his new crew and they will go to Dartmouth looking to be a strong contender for the World Championship title.  Sailing with co owner Phil Taylor, Chris Fisher and Chris Grube, Kevin was delighted with the performance and the improvements they made during the regatta.

“This regatta was about getting in a big fleet to improve our crew work and validate our speed,” commented Kevin. “Not only did our boat handling improve, so did our tactics and we were consistently fast which gives us confidence leading to the World Championship in Dartmouth”.

09 March 2012
The daffodils are coming into flower, the days are lengthening and before long the clocks will be going forward, surely Spring has sprung!

Although the keen skippers and crew amongst you may take part in a frostbite or perisher sailing series during the winter, for many this is a time of rest for themselves and the boat.  It is likely that the boat will have spent some time out of the water, so it can be cleaned and antifouled below the waterline, sails will have been removed and serviced, with general care and maintenance being carried out to make sure you are ready for the new season.

The new season is rapidly approaching; it certainly is a hive of activity for racing yachts near our headquarters in Hamble.  In just over a weeks’ time on Sunday 18th March, nearly 200 racing yachts will take to the waters in the Solent for the opening race of the 2012 Warsash Spring Series. We look forward to joining our customers out on the water as the weather warms up.

Over the last few months the design team at Ultimate Sails have been busy and in particular working on new sail development programmes for the recently launched Bavaria 40 Sport, the Dehler 32 and further tweaks to the successful J111 sails from the 2011 season.

The Bavaria 40 Sport has a racing profile when compared to standard Bavaria range. Designed for performance, yet with no compromise on comfort and manageable sailing the yachts are equipped with performance cruiser racing sails, which are currently undergoing trails on the Solent.

The new Dehler 32, is a fantastic small manageable racing yacht, with potential of capturing the imagination of Sigma 33 owners. Ideal for round the cans racing the new Dehler 32 will be out on the waters in the Solent using a full suit on sails custom designed by Ultimate Sails.

Building on the success of Ultimate Sails in the J111 class last year, we have been working on the designs and look forward to seeing another boat on the water with Ultimate Sails.  In 2011 Smokin Joe and True Love were out on the water using a full inventory from Ultimate Sails.  Between them, they were victorious in IRC 1 and finished 6th overall during Round the Island Race, as well as winning IRC at the J Cup and IRC 2 during Cowes week.  Holding off stiff competition it was clear the strength of the winning combination of J111’s and Ultimate Sail design.

We look forward to getting out on the water and bring you some updated pictures and reports on how they progress.

In the meantime if you have any queries about racing or cruising sails then please contact our sales team today, they are more than happy to help.  Please email sales@ultimatesails.co.uk or call 023 8045 6205.
