When it comes to winter storing of your sails we recommend that they be washed thoroughly as during periods of standing, salt and general dirt can damaged sail material and compromise sail strength and performance. Once washed, sails should be dried and stored somewhere away from damp and fluctuating temperatures.

Before storing it is also so a good idea to check over your sail for any signs of wear or damage as finding a problem early will save you rushing about at the start of the season or, even worse, having something break while you are on the water. It is simple enough to check over your sail yourself if you have the space to do so. The Luff, Leech and foot tapes are a good place to start; here you’d be looking for splitting, chafing and tears.

If you have batten pockets on your sails these are areas that are prone to getting caught, worn and damaged so take some time to check over these areas thoroughly making sure everything is intact and that there is no wearing, tears or un-stitching.

Make sure all fittings are present and intact, i.e. slides etc, and that the area around the fittings is undamaged and free of wear. Lastly check over the sail cloth itself for any tears or small holes that may have been caused by snagging or repetitive wearing on stanchions or other parts of your boat.

Following these simple guide lines at the end of each season will increase the longevity of your sails and limit your trips to the sail makers.

If you lack the space or would simply feel more comfortable leaving it to our 30 years of experience, here at Ultimate Sails we can take care of all these things for you, simply pop into the office or give us a call and we’ll take it from there.
